Research in metal allergy in relation to prostheses and stents

Allergenic metals such as nickel, chromium and cobalt are used in dental prostheses, hip and knee replacements as well as stents.

There may be metal release from these prostheses. If you have a preexisting metal allergy, there are studies suggesting that complications could arise for example in the form of inflammation of the mouth, loosening of knee and hip replacements or closing of the arteries in the heart (re-stenosis).

However, the significance of a preexisting metal allergy is far from established.

The research is carried out in collaboration between MD, PhD Stig Jakobsen, Professor Kjeld Søballe from Aarhus University Hospital and senior researcher, PhD Jacob Thyssen and senior researcher, PhD Kaare Engkilde and Professor Jeanne Duus Johansen from the National Allergy Research Centre and Professor Torkil Menné from the Department of Dermato-allergology at Gentofte University Hospital.
