Autoimmune illnesses & contact allergy

Cancer & contact allergy
An important aspect of prevention is knowledge about disease patterns and how various immune related diseases are linked.

Based on historical data from our clinical database, the National Allergy Research Centre has previously shown that individuals with contact allergy and thus an underlying change in the immune system have an altered propensity for rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes type 1, both immune-related diseases.

A new study (initiated in 2010) investigates whether individuals with contact allergy have an increased incidence of cancer and if their mortality is associated with contact allergy. This is done by linking data from the clinical database of allergy prevalence in the Capital Region with other disease registries (eg. National Patient Register).

The research is carried out by senior researcher, Msc and PhD Kaare Engkilde from the Allergy Research Centre.

Psoriasis & contact allergy

Allergic contact dermatitis is a common chronic skin disease. Evidence suggests that patients with autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, diabetes type 1 and rheumatoid arthritis do not develop contact allergy to the same degree as persons without these diseases. The reason for this is unknown.

The study examines the relationship between contact allergy and autoimmune disease with psoriasis as a model.

The research is carried out by MD, PhD-fellow Nannie Bangsgaard from the Dermato-allergological department at Gentofte Hospital in collaboration with the National Allergy Research Centre.
